Alfonso Jurado (ASW-20) had his third win of the contest and ended up in 1st place overall with 7499 points. His speed for the day was 61.56 mph. Joe Owensby finished fifth for the day in his HP-18. This was not good enough to retain his lead in the contest. He finished the event in second place overall with 7382 points. Ron Clarke (LS-6a) placed second for the day with a speed of 53.52 mph and moved up into third place overall with 6888 points. Robert Barber finished 3rd for the day in his Mosquito. Gene Hammond (ASW-20) fell from 3rd place to 11th place because of camera problems. Malcolm Stevenson, who had led the competition for a few days, landed his ASK-21 out for the second time today and ended up in 13th place overall. Tom Gilbert (the Austrailian Libelle pilot) also had a rough day today. If I understood the circumstances correctly, he forgot to take a new declaration photo before his relight. He realized this after getting out on course. It was then too late to start again so he just came home and landed, getting no points for the day. He had been in first or second place for the first half of the contest.
Congratulations to the victors and to all the competitors for flying hard for 8 days with temperatures in the 90s.
The competitors seemed quite happy with the soaring conditions here in Minnesota. We were happy to be able to send them off to compete 8 of the 10 days.
Thanks to everyone who helped out, including:
