Standard task was assigned and it was 369km to the north-east and east. The original task for the 15m class was exactly as long, but turnpoints were different. In an almost too familiar manner the stratus layer that was developing over Turku area rushed over Räyskälä. The weather degraded so much during standard class launches that we were forced to shorten the 15m class task to 256km. This decision was not a bit exaggerated, as many 15m class pilots had great difficulty to remain airborne after the tow. Even getting to the start gate, 10km west, proved difficult. However, the most 15m pilots were able to start the task after the weather on the start gate area locally got better for some time.
The lead in 15m class went through a lot of changes. As the differences in scores were not large to begin with, early outlandings of the reigning Finnish champion, Martti Sucksdorff, WS and Kai Kuusela, KK, lost their positions in the lead of the class in the tricky weather. Kai Kuusela was not able to start at all, but was forced to land home after spending one hour between 300 and 400m AGL. WS landed out on the field already after less than 40km flight. Both pilots were positioned well before Thursday.
Nobody flew home in either standard or 15m class. Trouble in the start and wide-spread stratus layer forced all pilots to land out, most of them to the surroundings of the last two turnpoints. The closest were Julien Henry, DA, France and Herbert Weiss, 3Y, Germany. They landed only 10km out from Räyskälä. Antti Lehto, AL, and Tapani Uoti, TU, both from Finland, flew the longest distances. Both improved their positions in the results quite significantly. Thomas Gostner, GT, Italy was among the unluckiest of the day. Flying less than 50km put him on the second position in the totals, and Frederic Hoyeau, RC, France is now in the lead. Gostner and Martti Koivula, VB, are very close though.
In the nationals, the triplet Pankka, Sorri and Taimioja has reached a quite secure position. In the international results, they are quite close to the pilots from Central Europe.
