underground Loop #2

Preface

Yep, dudes. The day is almost done. I'll have to post this with several other files to WWW and that's it. On this edition of 'underground Loop', you'll find stuff that has been collected today. I'll include two photos that should give you an idea of what we are losing... remember, this comes from the nerds in the scoring hut.

Click the thumbnails to get a larger image. Have no heart to comment these.

The main story of this 'issue' is from Tapio. If we have time, we may bring you some technicalities etc. on the coming days. Who knows.

Good publicity?

We have put a lot of effort to get as much as possible publicity for this competition. Riitta and Katri keep on contacting, calling, faxing and guiding media people around. Different radio stations visit us almost daily, local newspapers are filled with long stories with pictures, the largest newspaper gives us good room frequently and even the main TV- channel visited us on Sunday and sent a long spot in the main Sports magazine in the same evening. The press room is soon covered with clips from the papers. The results go to internet as soon as the busy scorers have time to do it. Still I received on Monday an email from a nearby glider pilot: "What' s going on there. Are you flying at all? Nothing in Internet and not a word in newspapers."

Later I discussed with him. I found out that he reads two newspapers daily and the big one on Sundays. He seldom watches television. The big one had nothing about gliding on Sunday, but a large story with pictures both on Saturday and Monday. The simple opening ceremonies was no news for them. The two smaller newspapers the guy reads are probably the only ones in Finland, who do not recognize this competition. Also one of our two web-servers did have technical difficulties, but the second one is working fine all the time.

The good media coverage (in my opinion) has brought us even spectators. During the launches and finishes there are many curious people, who want to find out what's this sports about. If only we had a good English and Finnish speaking speaker on site, I would be very satisfied. But it does not mean that everybody is.

The Tuesday's tasks seem to be ideal once again. The sea breeze in the West came further than expected, but luckily did not cause much harm to anybody. On the other hand the spreading clouds in the East stayed mainly outside the task area. I must have a careful eye on the task setters and metmen. They may become proud after the repetitive successes.
