In April/May 2022 I made a tour of the Balkans. The tour was organized by Zagreb Tours. It was originally planned for April 2020 but had to be postponed. They conducted the tour without extra cost in 2022. The organization was outstanding. I had two guides, each driving me for about half of the tour. Everything worked like clockwork. During the tour I wanted to put more emphasis on bird watching than originally planned. Both guides went out of their way to research bird watching sites during the tour and added visits to many bird watching sites.

Itinerary

Coming from Hrvatska (Croatia) we entered Bosnia in the morning. The border formalities were easy, no visa required for European Union citizens.

Our first stop was caused by the sight of golden roofs. It was a splendid Greek Orthodox Church, the Temple of Saint Sava in Mrkonjić Grad.

After a short stop for pictures we continued to Jajce. Jajce has a nice fortress. We hiked up to the fortress for a nice view of Jajce.

From Jajce we continued to Sarajevo, where we stayed for one night. I walked a bit around Sarajevo in the afternoon. The next morning I had a guided tour with a local guide. We saw some of the 16th century buildings.

From Sarajevo we drove to Mostar. Mostar has a very nice Old Town. Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We walked around the old town for a while.

From Mostar we drove to the Hutovo Park for some bird watching, before continuing to drive back to Hrvatska (Croatia). The border formalities again were very easy.

Observations

Bosna i Hercegovina (Bosnia and Herzegovina) is not quite as clean as Hrvatska (Croatia), there are a lot of plastic bags floating around. Driving was OK, not too chaotic.

Food and drink in Sarajevo were not too expensive for a big city.

I didn't talk with local people, so I don't know how the general population has dealt with the Siege of Sarajevo, when Serbia tried to conquer Sarajevo for 4 years. In Sarajevo there is nothing that reminds of the Siege, other than memorials. My local guide mentioned it several times, so older people still remember it well.
